讲座摘要: Despite a growing number of countries mandating women on corporate boards, little is known about the impact of these mandates on gender equality outside the boardroom. Exploiting the staggered adoptions of board gender quotas across Europe, we document a significant post-quota drop in the share of female employment across countries and industries. To shed light on the underlying mechanism, we apply textual analysis to job ads in the US to detect gender biases and quantify firms’ labor demand reference for different genders. We find that firms with a high female director share write less female-friendly job ads, discouraging female job applicants. This is especially true for lower-tier jobs, jobs in firms without female top executives, or jobs in industries with little product market competition. Tracking changes around the 2018 California board gender diversity statute for firms headquartered in and outside California reveals causal evidence that mandating women on corporate boards reduces firms’ demand for female labor. Overall, our results highlight that board gender quotas can trigger a backlash among firms, dampening female labor market participation.
